TO THE STARS... AND BACK!

One in two people will experience cancer at some point in their lives (Macmillan Cancer Support, 2024). Despite its prevalence, open conversations about cancer, especially with children, can be incredibly difficult.

To the Stars... and Back! combines storytelling with hands-on activities to gently explain the complexities of cancer, supporting families through sensitive discussions.

This project is an interactive children’s book designed to help families navigate the challenges of a parent’s cancer diagnosis. Combining gentle storytelling with creative, hands-on activities, such as fold-out pages, fingerprint keepsakes, and drawing and writing prompts, it supports open communication, emotional understanding, and meaningful connection between parent and child. Tailored for young readers, the book explains cancer treatments and emotions in an age-appropriate and accessible way, helping children make sense of a confusing and often frightening time. The book forms part of a memory box, encouraging families to collect drawings, letters, and small mementos, transforming the experience into a keepsake that preserves shared moments and offers lasting comfort. By blending education, creativity, and emotional support, this project helps children process difficult emotions while strengthening family bonds during a challenging journey.
